Akaal betekent ‘undying’ (onsterfelijk, ‘ontsterven’), undeath (‘ondood’) en ‘timeless’ (tijdloos). Het betekent dat er geen dood is, alleen bevrijding

In de Sikh gemeenschap bestaat de mooie traditie om bij een overlijden de overledene te eren door 'Akaal' te zingen. Zeventien dagen na elkaar, elke dag een aantal minuten. De kracht van deze mantra begeleidt de ziel op z'n reis naar het Oneindige, naar het Licht. Het is tegelijk ook een manier om afscheid te nemen en je eigen hart te helen.
